Bright Eyes and the Turtle

On June 25th Bright Eyes found a box turtle in the woods near our home. She played with it for a while and took it to visit her friends in the neighborhood. Shortly after Mom learned of the turtle's presence I assured Bright Eyes that it would not be a pet. Later that afternoon it was successfully released.

Congratulations on your find. You did the right thing by releasing it, since wild box turtle populations are declining in most areas.

Turtles are have home ranges and know their territories, so it's best to release them where you find them. If you encounter one on a road, the best thing to do is take it directly across, in the direction it's headed, and let it go about 50 feet from the roadside.
